Consent Event 11/01/23

 What is Consent?

I know it sounds pretty self-explanatory but you would be surprised at how many people don't actually know what consent means. We're tired of hearing the "no means no" speeches and the "my body my rules." Even though those are all correct and completely valid, we're here to talk about what consent actually means and how not acquiring consent can have drastic long-term repercussions on your academic career and lead to Title IX hearings.

Consent means "giving permission for something to happen or an agreement to do something," so, in reality you are asking for consent anytime you ask anyone for permission to do anything. Yet, the context we are here to talk about is consent in sexual and romantic activities.

Before following through anything that could remotely get romantic you should always ask the person you are talking to if they are comfortable with the situation or if they wish to stop, or if something was different. If they say it is okay, they are legally allowing you to proceed, though do not think this gives anyone any right to illegal acts or acts of harm to someone else, those are still crimes. In reality, the person is allowing you to continue with the romantic/sexual activities in the way that they are occurring, and that should happen before any activity of that kind.

"Oh but that is so awkward it can ruin the mood!" Safety is more important than a "mood" and guaranteeing your partner is comfortable with the situation is crucial. Besides, many people would actually say it does not in fact ruin any mood and makes the situation even better, because they now feel safe to know they can stop this act at any time they want!

Title IX protects students against sexual harassment. So, to teach the USFSP student body more about consent, we the DOS Ambassadors team organized an event this Wednesday!

SAY YES TO CONSENT 11/01/2023

We set our table outside USC at the Harbor Walk at 10 am and were immediately greeted with people interested in our game!
It consisted of a roulette with different responses to consent questions and the visitors had to guess if they were consentual responses or not. To our surprise almost everyone got the correct answer on the first try!
We also had multiple prizes such as sunglasses, pins with fun consent quotes, condoms and chapstick!

This was a great event and very educational! Many students had similar experiences and were able to draw on that knowledge to educate their peers and even the ambassadors!

We hope to catch you all at the next one! Don't forget to stay healthy in all that you do, and don't forget to follow us on:
